Excitement around food
In real-world situations such as on walks or during a party, food can be lying on the floor or on tables. Your dog may understand the “Leave It” command but can still pick food up when you are not aware or supervising. Human vocal intervention (“No”, “Leave It”, “Off”) may only work if the command is said before the action of picking up food. Instilling the default psychological expectation for your dog to ignore food lying on the ground is hence preferable.
